If you don’t seem to understand what the fuss is all about, take the phone number analogy. Mobile numbers had to switch to a new 10-digit number system when the 9-digit number combination ran out.
Similarly, every website that you visit has a numerical address. When you go to Facebook.com, you are actually connecting to a computer with the numerical address 66.220.149.32. It is these numbers which the web is running short of.
You are generally not aware of this because it happens seamlessly and automatically.
A new numerical system
What’s the solution to this? The numerical system used so far is the IPv4 protocol numbering system.
Websites would soon need to switch to a new protocol IPv6 which will offer far more numerical addresses. Sadly, the new system is not compatible with the existing numerical protocol.
The move is not going to impact consumers in any significant way, but it is likely that they may need to upgrade their operating systems and networking equipment because older ones may not work with the new system.
In June, major players like Facebook and Google will move to the new address for an entire day to test the new network.
It is unlikely that a permanent shift is going to happen anytime soon, but the focus is on moving on to the new technology.
The internet organization that whips out these numbers gave out its last set of existing numerical addresses. It was not predictable three decade ago that the web would run out of addresses so soon, as there were so fewer computers and websites than there are today.

But most networking equipment bought in the last 2 years should work, say experts.
Good time for makers of networking equipment
Makers of networking equipment like Cisco Systems and Netgear have much to rejoice because the transition to IPv6 is sure to make most people eventually upgrade their networking equipment in the coming decade.
Cisco already began selling IPv6 compatible networking equipment a few years back and is optimistic about future sales.
Facebook says that it began upgrading its network equipment several years back to make it easier for itself to move to IPv6.
